According to the US Department of Agriculture, genetically modified organisms (GMOs) account for 90% of crops grown by farmers. Generally, GMOs have been criticized for their potentially hazardous effects on humans and the environment. This is why we choose no GMO. Earthborn Products will always choose to side with nature when producing our Siberian Chaga. Especially since it’s purpose is to aid the body and adding unnatural processes could impair your health.
What Is a GMO Anyway?
Genetically modified organisms are plants that have had their genomes changed. Scientists do this for a variety of reasons. For example, they can strengthen the plant’s resistance to disease and pests, increase productivity, and produce higher yields. Over the past few decades, consumers have become aware of these GMO food products and have – rightly we feel – demanded that they are labeled.
GMO food – The Bad News
We’ve explained what gains scientists believe can come from GMOs. Here are some of the cons:
- Potential for Allergic Reactions: A 2013 study by the Annals of Agricultural and Environmental Medicine states that genetic engineering produces new proteins, some of which could cause an allergic reaction. There is also some evidence to suggest that GMOs account for a rise in food-related allergies among US children.
- Negative Impact on the Environment: As GMOs become more tolerant of insecticides, it may cause them to become troublesome in natural settings, where GMOs, of course, do not occur naturally. It is possible for new, human-modified, plants to become an invasive species in delicate, natural ecosystems.
- Increased Morbidity to Tumors: Annals of Agricultural and Environmental Medicine states that “milk from genetically modified cows increases levels of IGF-1 factor in consumers, showing a positive correlation with the development of tumors in the lungs, breast, and colon.”
- Cancer Formation: One study linked genetically modified corn to cancer formation in rats.
Regardless of whether or not GMO food products are healthy or hazardous, we continue to trust the power of nature. That’s why we avoid GMO foods.
